Basically, I want a cross between Allan Holdsworth and Grant Green, in a sense, but I also want the chordal approach of Keith Jarrett; that pianistic quality of creating harmonic space even as you’re soloing. Of course, Holdsworth does that too with single-note lines, but the integration of chords and melody is something that I really hear in my head now. And Keith is a master of that, as is Bud Powell or Elmo Hope. So you might say that I’m trying to combine aspects of Allan Holdsworth, Grant Green, Keith Jarrett, Bud Powell, and Elmo Hope on the guitar. And I’m making progress little by little in incremental steps.

Né le 28 octobre 1970, élève, entre autre, de Gary Burton, il fait ses armes en trio au club New Yorkais Smalls avec Ben Street à la contrebasse et Ballard à la batterie. Il intègre l’Electric Bebop Band de Paul Motian de 1992 à 1994. Puis on le retrouve aux côtés de Jim Blake, Andrew d’Angelo et Chris Speed pour Human Fell ou encore avec Q Type le gars de A Tribe Called Quest pour la production de son album Heartcore. On l’a aperçu en concert ou comme sideman aux côtés de Brad Mehdlau, Joshua Redman, Mark Turner, Jeff Balard, Phil Grenadier, Kris Bauman… Encensé par Pat Metheny (dont on retrouve certains gimmicks dans la musique de Kurt) et John Scofield, l’intéressé répond que le jazz s’auto congratule et tente de tracer sa voie en se mettant constamment en danger. Son jeu est fluide et rapelle parfois celui de Lennie Tristano.
