Il me faut tout de suite vous avouer que je n'ai pas écouté ce que faisait Meshell Ndegeocello depuis la sortie de son EP The Article en 2006. Mais quand j'ai entendu le premier titre de The Omnichord Real Book (sorti en 2023) j'ai aussitôt reconnu sa façon de chanter et de composer. Des titres construits autour de plusieurs idées où plusieurs ambiances s'entrecroisent ; un groove continuel avec un côté sans queue ni tête, déroutant mais plaisant : voilà le style de Ndegeocello. Le tout funky et intimiste faisant parfois penser à Prince.
Le nombre de musiciens présents sur ce disque donne le vertige. Chacun d'eux vient colorer un morceau. C'est peut-être de là que vient l'impression de voyager dans la tête de quelqu'un, celle de Meshell en l’occurrence. L'artiste nous présente son Real Book à elle, son parcours de vie en musique.
The Omnichord Real Book est un album éclectique, c'est aussi un album cohérent. Un univers traversé par le rock, l'électro, le funk, le hip hop, la folk, la soul et l'afro beat. Tout un monde qui trouve refuge dans le jazz. Meshell Ndegeocello c'est déjà 30 ans de carrière... et il va falloir que je rattrape mon retard dans sa discographie.

I have to admit that I haven't listened to what Meshell Ndegeocello was doing since the release of his EP The Article in 2006. But when I heard the first track from The Omnichord Real Book (released in 2023) I immediately recognized his way of singing and composing. Titles built around several ideas where several atmospheres intersect ; a continuous groove, strange, confusing but pleasant: this is Ndegeocello's style. All funky and intimate, sometimes reminiscent of Prince.
The number of musicians present on this disc is dizzying. Each brings his talent. Perhaps this is where the feeling of traveling into someone's head comes from, Meshell's brain in this case. The artist presents to us her Real Book, her life journey in music.
The Omnichord Real Book is an eclectic album, it is also a coherent album. A universe crossed by rock, electro, funk, hip hop, folk, soul and afro beat. A whole world who finds refuge in jazz. Meshell Ndegeocello has already had a 30-year career... and I'll have to dig her discography.
