We were waiting to shoot the restaurant scene [in "Help!" the movie] ... where the guy gets thrown in the soup and there were a few Indian musicians playing in the background. I remember picking up the sitar and trying to hold it and thinking, "This is a funny sound." It was an incidental thing, but somewhere down the line I began to hear Ravi Shankar's name.... So I went and bought a Ravi record; put it on and it hit a certain spot in me that I can't explain, but it seemed very familiar to me. It just called on me.... I bought a cheap sitar from a shop called India Craft in London. I hadn't really figured out what to do with it. But when we were working on "Norwegian Wood" it just needed something. It was quite spontaneous ... I just picked it up and found the notes and just played it. We miked it up and put it on and it just seemed to hit the spot.

On prend la voiture et on part en forêt, dans la forêt de Norvège où cet oiseau a volé. C'est la première fois qu'Harrisson enregistre de la sitar pour une chanson des Beatles, c'est aussi sûrement la première fois que cet instrument fait son apparition dans un morceau de Pop musique. La chanson chantée par John Lennon cause d'un type qui après une soirée à causer avec une fille fini par dormir dans la baignoire, alors il n'est pas content.

La toune a donné naissance- l'art engendre l'art- à diverses reprises : U2, Alanis Morissette, Herbie Hancock, Budy Rich et Frank Zappa, entres autres, mais aussi à une nouvelle de l'écrivain japonais Haruki Murakami intitulée Norwegian Wood. En piano solo il ne faut pas passer à côté de l'interprétation qu'en donne le pianiste Stefano Bollani sur son excellent album Les fleurs bleues (Label bleu, 2004). Chez Bob Dylan la chanson est sans aucun doute à la base d'un des morceaux de Blonde On Blonde. L'art répond à l'art.

On croise d'ailleurs sur la compilation The Bird Has Flown : A 40th Anniversary Tribute for The Beatles (Razor & Tie, 2005) une version de Norwegian Wood par les Fiery Furnaces au phrasé particulièrement Dylanien.
