Le claviériste américain Derek Sherinian joue avec Dream Theater de 1994 à 1999 ; on le retrouve aussi aux côtés d'Alice Cooper, Joe Bonamassa et Billy Idol. En solo (avec de nombreux invités) Derek en est à son neuvième albums. Après avoir fondé Son Of Appollo (deux LP et un live) il vient de sortir Insanium, premier opus de son nouveau groupe Whom Gods Destroy.
Il joue ici avec Bruno Valverde (le batteur brésilien d'Angra), Ron "Blumblefoot" Thal (guitariste de Son of Apollo, Art of Anarchy), le chanteur croate Dino Jelusick (que l'on retrouve avec George Lynch et Michael Romero) et le bassiste japonais Yas Nomura (Mammoth). Ces musiciens me font penser à des jazzmen des années 50 lors de la vogue du bebop ; ils savent qu'ils ne vont pas devenir des stars du rock en jouant la musique qu'ils font (du metal et du rock progressif... pas vraiment grand public), mais ils jouent leurs trucs à eux. Le disque a été mixé et masterisé par Bumblefoot et toutes les compositions sont signées par les membres du groupes. L'album est un concentré de ce que peut proposer une formation de metal progressif actuelle : énergie et constructions complexes. Le groove est parfois étrange (les claviers de Sherinian n'y sont pas pour rien). Les morceaux sont variés et jouent des contrastes (un peu de jazz par-ci, une touche de classique par-là) tout en restant résolument agressifs et sombres. Whom Gods Destroy, avec ce premier opus fait penser à Son of Appollo en moins aérien.

American keyboardist Derek Sherinian played with Dream Theater from 1994 to 1999; we also find him alongside Alice Cooper, Joe Bonamassa and Billy Idol. His solo carier (with many guests) includes nine albums. After founding Son Of Apollo (two LPs and a live album) he released Insanium, the first opus of his new group Whom Gods Destroy.
He plays with Bruno Valverde (the Brazilian drummer of Angra), Ron "Blumblefoot" Thal (guitarist of Son of Apollo, Art of Anarchy), the Croatian singer Dino Jelusick (who plays with George Lynch and Michael Romero) and Japanese bassist Yas Nomura (Mammoth). These musicians remind me jazzmen from the 50s during the bebop boom ; they know that they are not become rock stars by playing the music they do (metal and progressive rock... not really mainstream), but they play their own thing. The record was mixed and mastered by Bumblefoot and all the compositions are signed by the members of the group. The album is a concentrate of what a current progressive metal band can offer: energy and complex constructions. The groove is sometimes strange (Sherinian's keyboards have to do with it). The tracks are varied and played with contrasts (a little jazz in some places)... aggressive and dark. Whom Gods Destroy, with this first opus, is a kind of reminiscent of Son of Apollo but less airy.
