Klaus Schulze, lnterview

Dj Duclock : Bonjour Klaus.

Klaus Schulze : E-mails

Dj Duclock : Qu'écoutez-vous ? Quel est l'album du moment ?

Klaus Schulze : Scott Walker TILT

Klaus Schulze, Interview in English

Klaus Schulze : Hello. I started over twenty years earlier (than you), and PICTURE MUSIC was one of those earlier albums. At this time, the "old" Farfisa organ was still pretty new, I had picked it up on the way to a concert in Paris, from the German Farfisa dealer near Cologne. This was just one year before I did "Picture Music". Before, and for my albums IRRLICHT and CYBORG, I just owned a cheap & broken electric organ: I killed it when I tried successfully to tickle a few unusual sounds from it.
All this is so far away today, I mean in time duration. At this early time, synthesizers were a pretty new invention and no one could tell if they will be successful, or if they are just a temporary gimmick. Anyway, I liked this new way of creating music because I was searching for the New and those nouveau tools helped to realize my musical fantasies. But they were expensive. If I remember well, the EMS VCS 3 I had borrowed from a friend, Chris Franke. And the aforementioned heavy Farfisa organ I got more or less for free, because I helped the company to make the name better known; Farfisa seems to believe in the future of my music; the "special thanks" remarks on the original PICTURE MUSIC cover tells about it.

Dj Duclock : And now, in the very large choice of keyboard, electronic effects and computers, what are your choices, your preferences ? Are you lost or do you feel like a vertige facing the multiplication of possibilities ? What is your favorite keyboard or logiciel ?

Klaus Schulze : Some people seem to be more interested in the instruments that I use, than in my music :-) For me, the music was and still is first.
In the early seventies when the synthesizers were "the new sensation", every second journalist was asking me "what is a synthesizer?" --- but today? Today a composer (most composers, not only in the so-called "electronic music") has a computer and some software to create the sounds that he needs and likes. This software will be always updated, same as other people do with their text programme or with their graphic programme. Please don't ask which version of what programme(s) I use at the moment. I suppose I use always the best available for my Mac :-)
It is the craft of an artist (p. ex. a musician) to know what he wants and to choose the tools that he needs for doing his thing (p. ex. music). This immense "freedom of choice" is a great thing, but it is also the first important challenge to the artist. I don't use each and every note or sound or effect or rhythm all the time, but I have to choose a certain form, a theme, a melody, a rhythm, and I have to stick to it. I have to form something of my own, from the chaos that is in the "multiplication of possibilities". The next time, for the next track, for the next album I choose a bit differently, but I have never to forget the fundamental law of art which is : Repetition and Variation.

Dj Duclock : Can you tell us how a new composition comes ? What are your influences ? A picture you want to show ? A film you want to make with sounds ? A story to tell ? Or music you got in your head ?

Klaus Schulze : Sorry, I can't tell. Even if it is the usual question that fans and journalists have asked me during the last 38 years (and not just me, I suppose). Simply, I don't have an answer. Everything is of some influence to my life and my work. But if I want to make a picture, I would draw, paint, or make photos. If I want to make a film, I would shoot films. If I want to tell a story, I would make speeches or write articles or books. But I'm not a painter, not a filmmaker and not a writer. My profession is, in short: musician. Of course I can understand this curious question by fans who want to know how an artist functions and why he's doing what he is doing. But artists never think about this; at least I don't think about this.

Dj Duclock : Some artists think about this kind of processus, Queneau, a french writer, for exemple, worked a lot on this kind of questions about influences, what some call "inspiration", techniques of work and the resonance between arts... Now we began my three ritual questions, three questions I ask every time : What do you read this day ?

Klaus Schulze : E-mails

Dj Duclock : What do you listen to ? The album of the moment ?

Klaus Schulze : scott walker "TILT"

Dj Duclock : What is your last surprise ? The last time you've been surprised by something ?

Klaus Schulze : This winter...so much SNOW!!!!!!
